All the hundreds apply here: whole bunches, new wood and the age of the parcel. Built to last, this is a brilliant wine from Nicolas Groffier, which soars above the vintage conditions. It's subtle, complex and refined, with some of the latent power of the grand cru. Dense raspberry and black cherry fruit on the palate lead to a stylish, lingering finish.

The Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru contains 100% whole bunch fruit, matured entirely in new oak, which is barely noticeable on the nose, allowing the terroir to show through. Indeed, it is almost as difficult to discern the stem addition – a positive attribute, in my opinion. The fresh, taut palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and quite linear in style, stricter than Les Amoureuses, with a more saline/marine-influenced finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent, though I might have a soft spot for the Les Amoureuses and the Bonnes-Mares this year.
