The Clos de Bèze is more sumptuous and less high-toned than the Bonnes-Mares, offering up a bouquet of rose petal, candied peel, rich black cherry, cassis and dark chocolate. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, ample and expansive, its similarly tense chassis of tannin more completely enveloped in layers of ripe but vibrant fruit.
An ultra-spicy and markedly floral nose combines notes of red cherry, wild currant and earth with those of soft game and underbrush nuances. The polished, sophisticated and intense middle weight plus flavors display a lovely sense of verve that can also be found on the mineral-driven and well-balanced finale. Like the Bonnes Mares this isn't an especially big example of the appellation but it's harmonious and should drink well young if that's your preference.
