Liguria’s Coastal Essence: Vermentino in the Riviera Ligure di Ponente
Liguria lies along Italy’s northwest coast and is among the country’s smallest wine regions. It is known for its steep, terraced slopes and challenging viticulture, often called heroic because growers work on nearly vertical terrain facing the sea ([impetodivino.it](https://www.impetodivino.it/vini/regioni/liguria?utm_source=openai)). Within Liguria, the Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC stretches from the French border through the provinces of Imperia, Savona, and up into parts of Genoa. This broad and varied zone allows for notable variation in Vermentino styles, though each shares a coastal freshness and mineral imprint ([aisliguria.it](https://www.aisliguria.it/news/895-vermentino-ligure-conosci-a-quali-doc-appartiene-.html?PageSpeed=noscript&utm_source=openai)).
Vermentino is the white grape most closely linked with Liguria and especially this DOC. It thrives in poor, often calcareous soils, and benefits from maritime breezes that help retain acidity and aromatic intensity ([quattrocalici.it](https://www.quattrocalici.it/vitigni/vermentino/?utm_source=openai)). In Riviera Ligure di Ponente wines it must make up at least 95 percent of the blend. Expect a straw-yellow wine with delicate fruit and floral notes, a bright, sapid palate, and a clean, harmonious finish ([aisliguria.it](https://www.aisliguria.it/news/895-vermentino-ligure-conosci-a-quali-doc-appartiene-.html?PageSpeed=noscript&utm_source=openai)).
