Carlos Raposo: A Singular Voice in Dão’s Touriga Nacional
Carlos Raposo is a native of the Dão region whose journey took him from Burgundy through Australia, Spain and the United States, before returning to craft low‑intervention wines rooted in his homeland. He sources small lots of Touriga Nacional (and other varieties) from cooler, granitic sites around Serra da Estrela, a terroir that shapes wines with mineral clarity and forest‑spice nuance. His philosophy is simple yet precise: respect the purity that nature grants each vintage and express it through restrained, authentic winemaking ([tourinto.pt](https://www.tourinto.pt/en/produtores-portugal/vinhos-do-dao/carlos-raposo/?utm_source=openai)).
The Dão region itself is an enclave in north‑central Portugal, nestled among mountain ranges such as Estrela, Buçaco, Caramulo and Nave, which shelter it from maritime and continental extremes. Vineyards thrive at elevations between 400 and 800 meters in predominantly granite soils, stimulating aromatic complexity, fine acidity and balance in both red and white wines. Touriga Nacional finds a congenial home here alongside varieties like Encruzado, Alfrocheiro and Jaen, helping define Dão’s elegant, ageworthy character ([ivv.gov.pt](https://www.ivv.gov.pt/np4/%7B%24clientServletPath%7D/?fileName=IVV_2024.pdf&newsId=1736&utm_source=openai)).
