Comtadine’s Provençal Heart in Grenache-driven Côtes du Rhône
Comtadine is not an individual estate but the historic Cave La Comtadine, a cooperative cellar founded in 1930 in Puyméras, in the southern Rhône. Today it brings together over 280 growers cultivating some 1 300 hectares across twenty communes in the Haut‑Vaucluse and Drôme provençale. It produces wines in appellations such as Côtes‑du‑Rhône, Côtes‑du‑Rhône Villages Puyméras and Ventoux, reflecting the terroir’s sun-warmed character and Mediterranean influence. The Grenache grape is central to the style of the southern Rhône. It is the region’s most widely planted variety and thrives in its warm, dry climate and varied soils. Its wines are typically generous, round, and fruity, with good weight on the palate and the capacity to reflect local garrigue aromas. In the southern Rhône, Grenache is often blended with varieties like Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan and Cinsault, though single‑varietal bottlings are not uncommon, especially in cooperatives such as Comtadine.
